Gun Helmet | Albert Bacon Pratt’s

Although this weapon looks like a joke, the shooting helmet was patented on May 16, 1916 in the US Patent Database.

Albert Bacon Pratt offered for military use a special helmet with a built-in "gun". The weapon is multi-charged, semi-automatic, the automation works due to the recoil of the shutter. Caliber, unfortunately not known. A helmet is provided with a special window for the extraction of thermowells. For a shot, it is necessary to blow into a tube connecting with the "pear" located at the trigger. When the shooter blows into the tube, the "pear" is inflated and interacts with the trigger, a shot occurs. The helmet compartment with the "gun" is separated for safety from the shooter's head by a special "cap comforter". The sights are at eye level and are shown on the patent.

The patent describes that recoil does not cause the arrow inconvenience, since a special extinguishing spring is used. Aiming is much faster than when using a weapon with your hands, on an instinctive level. According to the inventor, the soldier reacts faster to danger by turning his head, and after a simple training he could hit the target. Modern sources say that recoil when shooting from a helmet could break the neck, however, there is no data on the caliber used, therefore it is impossible to speak with confidence about the strongest recoil. In 2011, Pratt’s shooting helmet was recreated on American television in an analogue program to the well-known “Legend Destroyers” and it was clearly demonstrated that it was possible to fire in this way.

Of course, this invention can be attributed to weapons oddities, but the inventor did not stop and patented a slightly modified version of the helmet in 1917.

The aiming with the help of the head with the ability to leave hands free did not give rest to the next generation of inventors - in 1953, a certain DE Salardi patented a submachine gun worn on his head.
