The Amazon is a river in South America, according to Brazilian researchers, the longest river in the world, as well as the largest in the world in terms of basin size, full flow and the length of the river system.
In 2011, according to the results of the global competition, Amazon is recognized as one of the seven natural wonders of the world.
The Amazon was opened by conquistador Francisco de Orellana, the first of the Europeans to cross South America in its widest part. In the summer of 1542, his detachment allegedly saw a tribe of legendary Amazons and entered into battle with them. Today it is believed that these were either Native American women who fought alongside men, or simply long-haired Indians, whom the Spaniards mistook for women. Initially, de Aurellana wanted to name the river by his own name, but after the battle he settled on the Amazon.
Amazonia surprises with the richness of fauna and flora. Over a million species of plants and animals inhabit a vast expanse, and this area without exaggeration can be called the global genetic fund.
Scientists claim that 1.5 thousand species of flowers, 750 species of trees, 125 species of mammals, 400 species of birds and countless invertebrates account for 10 km² of rain-forest. Many of their species are not even described or identified.
In the Amazon basin lies the world's largest wet rainforest. Alexander von Humboldt described this exceptional plant-based natural formation during his trip to South America in 1799-1804, calling it a gilea (from the Greek "gileston" - forest).
Anacondas guard the animals coming to the watering place near the shore - these boas, the largest of snakes, also hunt in the water, where even the caiman can be strangled.
