Many since childhood have known and loved cartoons about the sailor Popeye or Tom and Jerry, but few people know the name of the genius who created them. Eugene Merrill Deutsch, better known as Gene Deutsch, was an American illustrator, animator, comic book author and director. He is also known for the animated films Munroe and Crazy Cat.
Deutsch lived most of his life in Prague, where he moved back in 1959. He died on April 16, 2020 at the venerable age of 95. After the news of his death, artists from around the world flooded the Internet with touching drawings in memory of the departed master. Here are some of them:

Popeye was created by E. C. Segar and Tom & Jerry were created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. He directed some episodes of each show. Not to say he wasn't amazing at what he did, but he didn't create the shows.
