The communication between these two islands is made by a floating medium and by the hanging bridge, at the narrowest point of the Kanmon Strait, which is only 600 meters wide.

However, there are underwater tunnels that were built 60 years ago. One is for cars and the other for pedestrians and cyclists. The total length reaches 780 meters and connects Shimonoseki cities to Honshu and Moji Ward in Kyushu.

Those who want to take the bicycle with them will also have to pay 20 yen ($ 0.18) for entry, while the pedestrians can go for free.

Description for the underwater tunnel was given by Masanuki Sunakoma, who crossed the tunnel on the Kyushu side.

At the entrance there are two lifts, which take just one minute the passengers 60 meters, or about 18 floors, below the sea surface.

The walls and the roof of the pedestrian tunnel are painted with vivid shades of blue and fish designs, while its width reaches four meters.

The floor is also painted, but with markings that point to motorways.

At the end of the route, a stamped document is given to the passers-by, which is considered to be a certificate of the passage of the tunnel.
